Sioux Valley wins fifth-straight game

FLANDREAU The Sioux Valley softball team extended its win streak to five on Monday afternoon as the Cossacks beat Flandreau 10-0.

Sioux Valley scored eight runs in the final three innings to get the double-digit victory.

The Cossacks scored their first two runs in the first inning. Kassidy Smith and Zaylee Lantgen each walked to begin the inning and then McKinley Schwab singled to load the bases up with no outs. Smith came home on a Morgan Lemme single and then Lantgen scored on a ground out Ella Jacobsen to make it 2-0.

Neither team scored the next three innings. The Cossacks then struck for four runs in the fifth. A Langten walk and back-to-back singles from Schwab and Amelia Jacobson loaded the bases up with no outs again. Lemme then hit an RBI single and Audrey Murano was walked to make it 4-0. Lemme came home on an Abby Axtell ground out and Cameron Uecker hit an RBI single to push the lead to 6-0.

Sioux Valley scored three more runs in the sixth. Lantgen led off the inning with a double and Schwab hit her home with a triple. Jacobson then hit Schwab home with a single and she scored on a Murano double, making it 8-0 heading into the final inning.

Jaycie Olson walked to lead off the seventh. She then scored on a one-out triple from Jacobson and that made the final 10-0.

Sioux Valley had 14 hits. Jacobson was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Lemme was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Murano was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Schwab was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Axtell was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Uecker was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Jacobsen was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Lantgen was 1-for-2.

Flandreau had four hits as a team. Nora Hamilton was 2-for-2. Diamond Roy was 1-for-2 and Jacey Sundermeyer was 1-for-3.

Schwab pitched a complete game for the Cossacks. She gave up four hits and had 16 strikeouts and two walks. Olivia Peters pitched the first five innings for Flandreau. She gave up nine earned runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts and five walks. Hamilton pitched the final two innings and gave up one earned run on two hits with one walk and no strikeouts.

Sioux Valley is now 5-3 on the season. The Cossacks host Baltic on Thursday at 4 p.m. Flandreau is now 3-4 and plays at Arlington on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
