Bobcats win two in road doubleheader with Aberdeen

ABERDEEN The Brookings baseball team won a pair of games in Aberdeen on Monday afternoon.

The Bobcats beat the Smittys 15-8 in the first game and then took the second game 13-2. Brookings is now 4-6 and will host a doubleheader with Sioux Falls Washington on Tuesday. The first game will start at 5 p.m.

Game 1: Brookings 15, Aberdeen 8

The Bobcats outscored the Smittys 8-1 in the final three innings to earn the victory in game one.

Brookings led 5-1 at the end of the first. Tre Christopherson and Talon Hyde walked to begin the game. Christopherson then came home on a single from Jase Bauer. Tyson Antonen was walked with two outs and then Nolan Wagner hit an RBI single. Antonen then scored on an error and Wagner stole home to make it 5-0. Aberdeens run in the first came on a sacrifice fly.

The Smittys scored two runs in the second. Two batters were hit by pitches to lead off the bottom of the second and then both scored on a single to make it 5-3.

Brookings got those two runs back in the top of the third. Nolan Krogman walked with one out and then Cooper Schneider was hit by a pitch. Krogman stole home and Schneider made his way to third on a defensive indifference. He then scored on a sacrifice fly from Christopherson to make it 7-3.

Aberdeen tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. The first run of the inning came on an RBI single. The bases were then loaded with two outs and two walks and a hit batter scored three runs for the Smittys and tied the game.

It didnt take long for Brookings to regain the lead. Schneider hit a single and then stole second and made his way to third on a ground out. He then scored on a wild pitch. Hyde scored on a passed ball and Bauer scored on an error. Wagner then walked with the bases loaded to make it 11-7.

Brookings added another run in the sixth. Hyde reached on an error with two outs and then came home on a single from Bauer to make it 12-7 heading into the seventh.

The Bobcats scored three insurance runs in the final inning. Tane Friedrich singled to lead off the inning and Jay Harris followed with a double. Both runners then came home on an Antonen single. He later scored on a Schneider single to make it 15-7 heading into the final half inning. The Smittys scored one run in the bottom of the seventh but that was it.

Brookings had 11 hits. Bauer was 4-for-5 with two RBIs and Wagner was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Antonen was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Harris and Schneider were each 2-for-3 and Schneider had an RBI. Friedrich was 1-for-4 and Christopherson had an RBI without a hit.

Antonen got the start for the Cats and pitched three innings. He gave up three earned runs on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Schneider pitched two and a third innings. He gave up four earned runs on one hit with five walks and no strikeouts. Ryan Lockrem pitched two thirds of an inning. He gave up no hits and had one walk. Bauer pitched the final inning and gave up one unearned run on one hit. He had one strikeout and one walk.

Game 2: Brookings 13, Aberdeen 2

The Bobcats were walked 11 times in game two and that led to the double-digit victory for them.

Aberdeen led 1-0 at the end of the first inning as the Smittys scored a run on an error.

Brookings then scored three runs in the top of the second. Harris hit a one-out single and then Antonen and Winston Plummer were walked to load the bases up with two outs. Wagner, Christopherson and Schneider would then all draw walks and that made it 3-1.

The Bobcats added four runs in the third. Friedrich and Harris were walked to begin the inning. Harris then came home on a wild pitch. Maxten Jensen hit a single and then scored on a passed ball to make it 5-1. Schneider then hit a two-run single to make it 7-1. The Smittys scored another run in the bottom of the inning, making it 7-2 heading into the fourth.

Neither team scored in the fourth and then Brookings scored three runs in the fifth. Plummer led off the inning with a double and Chrisoptherson hit a one-out single. Plummer scored on a single from Schneider and Christopherson came home on a Bauer sacrifice fly to make it 9-2. Scheider would then score on a wild pitch to make it 10-2.

The Bobcats pushed the lead to 13-2 in the top of the seventh. Bauer and Friedrich were hit by pitches with one out. Bauer came home on a passed ball. Harris hit into a fielders choice but scored on a passed ball as well. Jensen then hit an RBI single to make it an 11-run game heading into the final half inning.

Brookings had seven hits. Schneider was 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Jensen was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Christopherson was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Harris was 1-for-4 and Plummer was 1-for-1. Wagner and Bauer each had an RBI without a hit.

Krogman pitched the first five innings for the Bobcats. He gave up two runs, one earned, on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Lockrem pitched the final two innings and gave up one hit and two strikeouts.
