BROOKINGS An early morning police chase Sunday ended in a wrecked pickup and a Mitchell man in county jail facing a raft of charges, including thirdoffense DUI.
According to a news release from the city, the Brookings Police Department began a traffic stop of a black 2008 Dodge Dakota near the intersection of Sixth Street and Main Avenue shortly after 2 a.m. on Easter morning.
The driver of the truck, later identified as Brandon Kendall, did not stop and continued west past Western Avenue and headed toward the bypass, according to the release.
The truck, which was traveling erratically and clocked at 47 miles per hour in town according to the release, did not make the turn at the bypass and rolled over.
The officer then called for an ambulance, which arrived and took Kendall to the Brookings Health System for treatment for lacerations.
Kendall was listed on the jail roster at the Brookings County Detention Center later Sunday afternoon, facing charges that include: speeding, DUI 3rd, failure to maintain financial responsibility, lane change violation and eluding police.
In South Dakota, a third DUI offense in 10 years is a Class 6 felony, punishable by up to two years in the State Peniteniary, a $4,000 fine or both. Eluding police is a Class 1 misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in county jail, a $2,000 fine, or both.
According to release from the city, the investigation is still pending and the accident scene is being reconstructed by a team from the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
