Late rally leads Cossacks over Flyers in Volga

VOLGA The Sioux Valley softball team scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and then shutdown Chester in the top of the seventh to come away with a victory in their first game at home this season.

Sioux Valley trailed 6-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Avery Murano, Abby Axtell and Kassidy Smith all walked with one out. Zoe Hemmestad then popped out for the second out of the inning. McKinley Schwab then hit a triple that cleared the bases and tied the game. She then stole home and the Cossacks took the lead.

Schwab then shut down the Flyers one-two-three in the top of the seventh.

Sioux Valley jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Smith and Hemmstad led off the inning with back-to-back doubles. Amelia Jacobson then hit both runners home with a single.

Chester answered with three runs in the top of the second. Katelyn Schut hit an RBI single and then Jacy Wolf hit a two-run double to make it 3-2.

The Cossacks tied the game in the bottom of the second. Axtell was hit by a pitch with two outs and then advanced to third on a Smith single. She then came home on a Hemmestad single and it was 3-3 heading into the third.

The Flyers took the lead on an RBI double from Ramsie Shoenrock in the top of the third. Neither team scored the next three innings, setting up the Cossacks comeback in the sixth.

The Cossacks had nine hits in the game. Schwab was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Jacobson was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Hemmestad was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Smith was 3-for-3.

Schwab pitched a complete game for Sioux Valley. She gave up six earned runs on 12 hits and had 11 strikeouts and three walks.

Sioux Valley has now won four-straight games after losing its first three. The Cossacks play at Flandreau on Monday at 4 p.m.
