Councilors should pick Austreim to fill vacant seat

Al Austreim should be selected by the City Council to fill the available seat. Heres why:

Al has lived in Brookings since 1995, when he moved from Flandreau to attend and graduate from SDSU. He is a small-business owner and he has raised his family in Brookings. His 30 years of residence and business ownership make him more than qualified as a dedicated Brookings citizen with a higher stake than most in our community. Als landscaping business keeps him in constant contact with other business owners, home owners, landlords and Brookings government organizations.

Because of this he is very tuned in to the needs and desires of our community at every level. He is in a position to give back to our community and his experience and knowledge would be a valuable asset to the City Council, our citizens and the future of our city.

Al wants more citizens to get involved in governing their city, and by doing so, bring greater transparency to city government. This goal is driven by his contact with members of our community who, like Al, sometimes question the decisions made about our future. Not because the decisions are not good, but in order to fully explore the options available and how they affect our citizens in the short and long term. Thats where his community contacts and experience become pertinent to the decision-making process.

Adding his unique views to the governing procedures would be extremely valuable.

I urge the City Council to select Al Austreim. The community at large, through the election process, has brought him close to winning a seat twice. Had the empty seat been part of the regular election process, Al would be a member of the Council. Its time to make that happen and give this man, who only wants to help our city, the opportunity to serve.
