BROOKINGS Working in three two-hour shifts Saturday morning and early afternoon in the St. Thomas More Parish gym, a total of about 360 volunteers of all ages from the All Saints Pastorate, Sioux Falls Catholic Diocese, got the job done more than done. The goal of packing of 100,000 fortified meals was surpassed: 103,896 meals were packed. In about 3 to 4 months the meals will reach their destination and feed Sudanese refugees in camps in Africa.
The Kids Against Hunger project was under the umbrella of Helping Kids Round First, a non-profit humanitarian effort headed up by Craig Severtson and home-based in Flandreau. The boxes of packaged meals were trucked to an HKRF warehouse there on Saturday. Now Severtson will track the logistical effort of the movement by land and sea that is needed to get the meals to the people who need them.
Cheryl Austeim, a member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas and STM parishioner, helped organize and oversee the effort. She said the effort will be repeated next year and could become an annual event.
