BROOKINGS The Brookings baseball team dropped a pair of games against the Yankton Bucks on Saturday afternoon at Bob Shelden Field.
The Bucks won the first game 10-5 and then took game two 7-4. Brookings is now 2-4 on the season and plays a doubleheader at OGorman on Tuesday. The first game against the Knights is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Game 1: Yankton 10, Brookings 5
Yankton struck for six runs in the first inning and didnt look back in game one.
The first run of the game for the Bucks came on an error. The Bucks then scored on a sacrifice fly and a single to make it 3-0. An RBI single and a two-run single pushed the lead to 6-0 heading into the bottom of the inning.
Brookings would answer with four runs in the bottom of the first. Tyson Antonen and Jase Bauer hit back-to-back one-out singles. Tane Friedrich hit Antonen home with a single and then Bauer scored on an error to make it 6-2. Talon Hyde came to the plate and hit it in the right center field gap and scored two runs to make it 6-4.
Neither team scored in the second and then Yankton pushed the lead 8-4 in the third. The first run in the third came from a double and then a run on a fielders choice extended the lead to four.
The Bucks added another run in the fourth. They led off the inning with a single and then followed it with a double. A run then came in on a line out to center field to make it 9-4.
Brookings final run of the game came in the bottom of the fifth. Tre Christopherson led off the inning with a single. He then came home on a double from Bauer and it was 9-5 heading into the sixth.
Yanktons final run came on a single in the seventh. The Bobcats got two runners on in the bottom of the seventh but then a fly out and back-to-back pop ups ended the game.
Brookings had nine hits as a team. Hyde was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Bauer was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Friedrich was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Antonen was 1-for-4. Nolan Krogman and Christopherson were each 1-for-3 and Cooper Schneider was 2-for-3.
Wagner pitched the first three innings for the Cats. He gave up eight runs, six earned, on six hits with six walks and no strikeouts. Schneider pitched the final four innings and gave up two runs, one earned, on five hits with one strikeout and two walks.
Game 2: Yankton 7, Brookings 4
The Bucks offense struck early again in game two as they led 6-2 heading into the third.
Each team scored two runs in the first. Yanktons first run of the game came on a fielders choice and then the Bucks made it 2-0 with a single. Christopherson walked to lead off the bottom of the first with a walk and Antonen followed with a single. Friedrich hit Christopherson home with a double and then Antonen scored on a sacrifice fly from Hyde to make it 2-2.
The Bucks scored four runs in the second. Two walks and a single loaded the bases with one out and then back-to-back singles scored three runs. Another RBI single made it 6-2 heading into the third.
The Bobcats loaded the bases in the bottom of the second but were unable to score any runs. However, Brookings did cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third. Bauer led off with a double and then Friedrich walked. Bauer scored on a steal of home. Friedrich was out on a Hyde fielder’s choice and then Hyde scored on a Harris single, making it 6-4 heading into the fourth.
Neither team scored the next two innings and Yankton scored the final run of the game in the sixth. The run came on a single and then the Bobcats were unable to score in their final two offensive half innings.
Brookings had nine hits. Harris was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Friedrich was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Christopherson was 1-for-2 and Bauer was 2-for-3. Antonen and Maxten Jensen were each 1-for-4 and Wagner was 1-for-1.
Hyde got the start for Brookings and pitched the first two innings. He gave up six runs, four earned, on six hits with one strikeout and three walks. Krogman pitched the next four innings and gave up one unearned run on two hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Bauer pitched the final inning and gave up one hit and had one strikeout.
