BROOKINGS The Brookings softball team lost a high-scoring affair to Brandon Valley on Friday afternoon as the Lynx came away with a 15-9 victory.
A six-run sixth inning proved to be the difference in the game as the Bobcats led 7-6 heading into the sixth.
Brandon Valley scored two runs in the top of the first inning on a two-run home run from Danielle Schoby. The Bobcats answered with a three-run home run from Kymber Buys after Morgan Norgaard and Kalla Foerster led off the bottom of the first with back-to-back singles.
The Lynx regained the lead in the top of the second. Karlee Small and Macy Lembcke walked and then both runners came home on a triple from Peyton Amdahl. Brookings answered again in the bottom of the second and scored three more runs. Layla Erickson drew a walk with one out and Addy Bortnem followed that with a single. Norgaard then came to the plate and hit one over the center field fence and the Cats took a 6-4 lead heading into the third.
Brandon Valley went down one-two-three in the top of the third and then Brookings extended its lead to 7-4 in the bottom of the inning. Ramsie Hinricher led off the inning and she hit it over the right field fence to push Brookings lead to three.
The Lynx scored two runs in the top of the fifth. Gabriel Kriech scored on a sacrifice fly from Kennedy Fitts and then Aniston Murray hit a single and scored on an error to make it 7-6.
Kriech hit a two-run single in the top of the sixth to give the Lynx the lead. Lembcke then hit a grand slam to make it 12-7 heading into the bottom of the sixth.
Brookings cut the lead to 12-9 in the bottom of the inning. Bortnem walked to lead off the inning and Norgaard followed with a double. Both runners then scored on a one-out single from Buys.
However, Brandon Valley struck for three runs in the top of the seventh. Schoby hit a two-run home run and then Murray hit an RBI single to make it 15-9 going into the final half inning.
Keisha Cushing led off the bottom of the seventh with a single but was caught stealing. Hinricher then struck out and Grace Romsa lined out to end the game.
Brookings had 10 hits as a team. Buys was 3-for-4 with five RBIs and Norgaard was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Hinircher was 1-for- 3 with an EBI and Cushing was 1-for-3. Foerster was 1-for-4.
Tess Burns pitched the first six and a third innings for the Bobcats. She gave up 15 runs, 13 earned, on 10 hits with five strikeouts and eight walks. Ella Pysk got the final two outs for Brookings and gave up one hit and had two strikeouts and one walk.
Brookings is now 2-1 and hosts Aberdeen Central on Tuesday at the Southbrook Softball Complex in Brookings.
