Open City Council seat draws interest in Brookings

BROOKINGS When former Councilor Andrew Rasmussen vacated his seat on the seven-member Brookings City Council on Feb. 28, it created an opening one that, following an application process, has attracted eight candidates.

Those hopefuls, per a Thursday news release from the city, are:

  • Al Austreim
  • Blake Stevens
  • Eric Griggs
  • Hannah Markley
  • Larry Ayres
  • Lisa Hager
  • Michael Lambertus
  • Zeno Wicks

The remaining term of the open seat runs from May 1 of this year to April 30, 2026. Whoever winds up filling it a decision that will be made by the City Council must be registered to vote and have lived in the city for a minimum of six months.

The City Council is inviting the applicants to attend an April 15 study session so that they can provide additional information to councilors and respond to any questions. The public is also invited to offer comments as well. The goal, according to the release, is for the City Council to vote someone to fill the open seat at its regular meeting on April 22.

Rasmussen made his announcement at a Feb. 25 City Council meeting. Earlier reporting by the Brooking Register said it came about because of a job opportunity in Washington, D.C.

The move to fill the open seat comes after Tuesdays combined city/school elections returned two incumbents to the City Council Holly Tilton Byrne and Bonny Specker. Austreim was also a candidate, taking part in his second attempt at a seat on the council, and came up 117 votes shy of earning a nod from voters.
