REDFIELD The Sioux Valley softball team came up short on Thursday afternoon against Redfield, falling 4-3.
Redfield led 1-0 after the first inning. Charli Jungwirth led off the bottom of the first with a double. She then stole third and came home on a steal of home to give the Pheasants the lead.
The Cossacks took the lead in the top of the fourth. Morgan Lemme led off the inning with a walk and then Amelia Jacobson Jacobson singled. Lemme would score on a Ella Jacobsen single and then Jacobson came home on a Audrey Murano single. That made it 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth.
Redfield would regain the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Hayden Gall led off the inning with a double and then came home and tied the game on a Layla Hardie single. Jadie Turner hit another single for the Pheasants and Madysen Morrissette hit both Hardie and Turner home with a single of her own, making it 4-0 heading into the sixth.
The Cossacks cut the lead in half in the top of the sixth. Savana Guthmiller led off with a single and then was out advancing to home on a single from Jacobsen. Jacobsen stole both second and third and then came home on a wild pitch to make it 4-3.
Sioux Valley kept Redfield off the board in the bottom of the sixth and had one more chance in the seventh. McKinley Schwab hit a two-out double but then Lemme flew out to center field to end the game.
The Cossacks had nine hits as a team in the loss. Jacobsen was 3-for-3 with an RBI and Murano was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Jacobson was 2-for-3 and Schwab and Zoe Hemmestad were each 1-for-4. Guthmiller was 1-for-3.
Abby Axtell pitched a complete game for the Cossacks. She gave up four earned runs on eight hits with 11 strikeouts and four walks.
The Cossacks are now 0-3 and play a doubleheader at Deubrook on Friday. The first game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
