BROOKINGS It was a tale of two games on Tuesday night for the Brookings baseball team as the Bobcats split a doubleheader with Sioux Falls Lincoln in their first games of the season at Bob Shelden Field.
Brookings lost 16-2 in five innings in the first game and then beat the Patriots 11-1 in five innings in game two. The Bobcats are now 2-2 and will host Yankton on Saturday. It will be a doubleheader with the first game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
Game 1: Sioux Falls Lincoln 16, Brookings 2 (5 inn.)
The Patriots controlled game one throughout and ended the game with a seven-run fifth inning.
Lincoln scored three runs in each of the first two innings. The first two runs of the game for the Patriots came on a two-run triple. They then used a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0. An RBI single, a sacrifice fly and a run from a ground out pushed the lead to 6-0 in the second.
The Patriots scored a run on a passed ball in the top of the third. The Bobcats then scored their only two runs on the game in the bottom of the inning. Cooper Schneider walked to begin the inning and Tre Christopherson followed with a single and then advanced to second on the throw. Tyson Antonen hit an RBI single and Jase Bauer followed with an RBI double to make it 7-2.
SFL scored another run on a passed ball in the top of the third. Then an RBI single pushed the lead to 9-2. A steal of home in the fifth and an RBI single made it 11-2. A bases loaded walk and then a bases clearing triple extended it to 15-2. The final run of the game for SFL came on a passed ball.
Brookings loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth but was unable to score and the game ended due to the 10-run rule.
The Bobcats had four hits in the game. Antonen was 1-for-1 with an RBI and Bauer went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Christopherson and Tane Friedrich were each 1-for-2.
Ryan Lockrem started the game for Brookings and pitched two innings. He gave up six earned runs on six hits with one strikeout and three walks. Kysin Reuer pitched two and two thirds innings and gave up 10 runs, eight earned, on six hits with one strikeout and six walks. Schneider pitched the final third inning and gave up no runs and no hits.
Game 2: Brookings 11, Sioux Falls Lincoln 1 (5 inn.)
The Bobcat offense got going in game two as they had 11 hits.
Brookings scored three runs in each of the first two innings. Christopherson led off the bottom of the first with a single and then Bauer walked. Friedrich then hit both runners home with a single. Jay Harris singled and Reuer walked to load the bases up and Nolan Wagner hit Friedrich home with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.
Lincoln scored a run in the top of the second on a wild pitch. Three-straight walks loaded the bases for the Bobcats in the bottom of the inning. Schneider then scored on a Bauer single and Friedrich hit a two-run single to make it 6-1 heading into the third.
Brookings then finished the game with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Wagner hit an RBI single and then Maxten Jensen walked and Schneider singled to load the bases. Wagner scored on catchers interference, Tyson Antonen hit an RBI single and then Bauer drew a bases loaded walk to make it 10-1. Harris then hit an RBI single to end the game.
Friedrich was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Bauer was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Wagner was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Christopherson was 1-for-1 with an RBI. Harris was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Antonen was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Schneider was 1-for-2.
Antonen pitched a complete game for the Bobcats. He gave up one unearned run on three hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
