The Hillcrest Elementary School second-grade teachers were presented with four American flags to use in their common areas. The common areas are used for combined class activities, including pledging to the American flag at the beginning of the school day.
Each room originally was set up with the American flag, but because of cost factors the common areas were not given flags; that need was taken care of by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2118 Auxiliary. The VFW Auxiliary promotes their Americanism Program in many ways and providing the American flags to the classroom is just one of the ways we can encourage Americanism for our youth.
The Americanism Program covers a wide variety of avenues to distribute information and encourage participation for American patriotism. Going into classrooms and informing students to senior citizens the history of the flag, the meaning of the colors and symbolism of the flag as well as the history of the flag is a central part of the program. The flag etiquette and flag folding portions of the program are always popular.
Other Americanism programs are the White Table presentation, the Missing Man formation explanation, the POW/MIA flag history and the story of the Four Chaplains. Schools and organizations are always welcome to contact Americanism Chairman Jan Olson at [email protected] for more information or scheduling a time.
