Bobcats split season opening doubleheader with Yankton

YANKTON The Brookings varsity baseball team split a doubleheader with Yankton on Sunday afternoon.

It was the first two games of the season for the Bobcats and they dropped the first game 6-1 and followed that with a 1-0 victory in game two. Brookings will host a doubleheader with Sioux Falls Lincoln on Tuesday night, with the first game set to start at 5 p.m.

Game 1: Yankton 6, Brookings 1

The Bobcat offense couldnt get things going in game one and four errors cost them in the field.

The Bucks scored three runs in the second inning. The first two runs came from a two-run single and then an error led to a 3-0 hole for Brookings. An RBI single in the third then pushed Yanktons lead to 4-0.

The lead grew to 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth as a two-run single brought home two runs for the Bucks. Brookings lone run in the game came in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly from Tane Friedrich.

Brookings had two hits as a team. Jay Harris was 1-for-2 and Jude Meendering was 1-for-3.

Tyson Antonen got the start for the Bobcats and pitched two innings. He gave up three runs, two earned, on one hit with two strikeouts and three walks. Nolan Wagnerpitched the final four innings and gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Game 2: Brookings 1, Yankton 0

Each team had four hits but it was the Bobcats who were able to score the only run of the game.

That run came in the fourth inning. Antonen led off the inning with a single. He then stole second and came home on a Friedrich single to give the Bobcats the lead.

The Bucks had two runners on in the bottom of the fourth and were not able to score. Brookings then allowed just one runner on the rest of the game.

Friedrich was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Antonen and Winston Plummer were each 1-for-3.

Ryan Lockrem pitched the first three innings for the Bobcats and picked up the win. He gave up no runs and one hit with three strikeouts and two walks. Baker Hanson pitched the next two innings and gave up two hits with a walk and no strikeouts. Jase Bauer picked up the save for the Cats, giving up one hit with one strikeout and no walks.
