BROOKINGS Gov. Larry Rhoden will be on the South Dakota State University campus on April 11 to recognize the achievements of and honor those students already dedicated to the service of their nation: Army and Air Force ROTC cadets.
The program begins at 11 a.m. in the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center with a welcome and introduction of guests by Lt. Col. John Peary, U.S. Army and professor of military science.
Following that comes the presentation of colors and the national anthem, after which SDSU President Barry H. Dunn will deliver opening remarks. He will be followed by the governors address.
Presentation of awards and honors follows. Two major awards being presented are the Governors Cup. It goes to the top cadet of the hosting unit, which this year is the Army; the Presidents Cup goes to the top Air Force cadet.
Governors Day dates back to 1918, when Peter Norbeck was governor and Omar Bradley was professor of military science. Bradley would go on to fame in World War II, becoming a five-star general in the Army and later becoming the first chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
