Museum After Dark party returning to Brookings on April 25

BROOKINGS Adults need play, too. With that in mind, the Childrens Museum of South Dakota in downtown Brookings is hosting a 21+ Museum After Dark party on April 25 from 7 to 10 p.m.

The event will include full access to the museums exhibits with additional nostalgic games taking place throughout the night.

Super Market Sweep, life-size Hungry Hungry Hippos, Light Bright Pictionary, and crafts from the 1990s will welcome guests to the museum not to mention craft beer from Wooden Legs Brewing Co.

Weve heard people say that the museum looks like so much fun and theyd love to come, but they dont have a kid to bring with them, operations and exhibit manager Charles Stuart said. I want people to know that its ok and encouraged for adults to play, too.

Play relieves stress, improves brain function, boosts health, and plain feels good. Play is actively engaging and offers new ways to learn. Play is crucial for mental health.

While the benefits of play are similar for adults and children, play looks different for adults. Adults might experience play in sports and competitions, or video games and hobbies, to name a few. But play is as much about mindset than the activity that takes place.

When was the last time you were just plain silly? We love inviting people into our space who have never played with us before, Kerrie Vilhauer, director of marketing and communications, said. Museum After Dark will be an opportunity for people to let loose and explore in their own way. We have a judgement free zone.

The museum features a lifelike KidStreet with an auto mechanic, grocery store, and water play area. A two-story climber invites people of all ages to climb through a cloud enclosure with views of the entire exhibit space below. The star of the show, a full-size Mama T. Rex dinosaur, oversees an outdoor play area.

During Museum After Dark, Caf Coteau, the museums onsite restaurant, will serve flatbread pizza. And in addition to the Wooden Legs craft beer selection, beverages such as hard seltzer and non-alcoholic options will be available.

We are excited for people to come let loose, get out of their comfort zone, and have some fun, said Stuart. This is a great way to showcase the museum to the community and share the work we do in sparking imagination for everyone.

Tickets can be purchased at prairieplay.org. Admission is $15.
