YANKTON The Brookings softball team opened up the 2025 season with a 16-0 win over Yankton on Monday night.
The Bobcats made quick work of the Gazelles as they won in three innings.
Brookings scored six runs in the top of the first. Morgan Norgaard walked to open the game and then she was hit home by a double from Kymber Buys. Buys then scored on an error and then two more runs came home on another error. Layla Erickson came to the plate with Kendall Linstad on second base and she hit one over the center field wall to make it 6-0.
The Bobcats added four runs in the second. Buys singled to lead off the inning and then Kinzey Grendler and Tess Burns walked to load the bases up with no outs. Keisha Cushing was then walked and Grendler and Quinn Kurtenbach each scored on an error. Cushing then came home on a fielders choice and that made it 10-0 heading into the third.
Norgaard led off the third with a walk and Buys followed with a double. Buys then scored on an error and Grendler scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 12-0. Kurtenbach stole home and Kalla Foerster Hit an RBI single to make it 16-0. Addy Bortnem followed with a two-run single and that made it 16-0.
The Gazelles went down one-two-three in the bottom of the third and that ended the game due to the 15-run rule.
Buys was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Bortnem was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Foerster was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Erickson was 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Cushing had three RBIs and Linstad had two RBIs.
Burns pitched all three innings for the Cats. She gave up one hit and had one strikeout and two walks.
The Bobcats are scheduled to host Mitchell on Thursday at 6 p.m.
