Jackrabbits promote Petersen to head coach of men’s basketball

BROOKINGS South Dakota State announced on Saturday that Bryan Petersen will be the 23rd head coach of the mens basketball program.

Petersen has been an assistant for the Jackrabbits for the past six years under former head coach Eric Henderson, who resigned on Friday to take the head coaching position at Drake. During the six seasons that Petersen was an assistant, SDSU went 129-60 and made the NCAA Tournament twice.

Prior to his time at SDSU, Peterson was the head coach of Kirkwood Community College for six seasons. Kirkwood won the NJCAA Division II Championship 2016 and 2019 under Petersen. Petersen was an assistant at Kirkwood for one season after spending three years as a graduate assistant at Iowa State under current Creighton head coach Greg McDermott. He played his collegiate career at Iowa State.

Petersen thanked SDSU President Barry Dunn and Director of Athletics Justin Sell in a statement released by the school on Saturday.

I couldn’t be more excited and grateful to have the opportunity to lead the Jackrabbit men’s basketball program,” Petersen said. “I want to thank President Barry Dunn, Justin Sell and the rest of their team for believing in me to become the next head coach at South Dakota State. The vision and core values of SDSU align perfectly for both myself and my family. I also want to thank coach (Eric) Henderson for giving me the opportunity to work and learn from him over the last six years.

“I am ready to get to work with our team and continue to build off the success of our program. Jackrabbit Nation is special and I look forward to another packed First Bank & Trust Arena next season.”

Petersen takes over an SDSU program that went 20-12 overall and 11-5 in the Summit League last season.

A news conference with the media is scheduled for 10 a.m. April 4.
