Henderson resigns to take head coaching job at Drake

BROOKINGS South Dakota State announced on Friday evening that Eric Henderson has stepped down as the mens basketball head coach and is going to take the head coaching job at Drake.

Henderson spent the past six seasons with the Jackrabbits and went 129-60. He led the Jacks to the NCAA Tournament in 2022 and 2024. In 2022 SDSU won 30 games and became the first team in Summit League history to go undefeated in conference play. His winning percentage of .683 is the best in SDSU in over a century.

The school released a statement on Friday and SDSU director of athletics Justin Sell thanked Henderson for the work he did for the Jackrabbits.

I want to thank Eric for all of his contributions to the SDSU community. Eric has been a tremendous leader for the student-athletes he’s coached and has built upon the foundation of a program with a rich tradition. We wish him, his wife Alicia and the entire Henderson family nothing but the best, Sell said.

Henderson was an assistant at SDSU from 2016-19 under T.J. Otzelberger. SDSU went to the tournament in both 2017 and 2018 under Otzelberger.

SDSU says a search for the next mens basketball head coach is underway.
