BROOKINGS A damaged valve on a 1,000-gallon propane tank Thursday afternoon led to a long night of waiting for the Brookings Fire Department personnel.
BFD Chief Pete Bolzer told the Brookings Register that the call came in 4:30 p.m., and that crews were on the scene until 1:30 a.m. Friday. The valve was sheared off by a man-lift at a construction site in the 600 block of 22nd Avenue South in such a manner that made it impossible to offload the propane tank. Firefighters moved it away from a building and then started blowing it off a process that took hours to complete.
Blowing off the tank means that we are utilizing the current wind direction and wind to allow the tank to vent naturally into the atmosphere, Bolzer explained, adding that there were no injuries from the incident.
