Ranger girls win opening state tournament game

SIOUX FALLS The Brookings Rangers girls varsity opened the state tournament with a 3-1 victory over the Rushmore Thunder on Thursday at the Scheels IcePlex.

The Rangers scored all three of their goals in the second period after neither team scored in the first.

Anna Rasmussen put Brookings up 1-0 a little over two and a half minutes into the second period. She was assisted by Kinzey Grendler and Miyah Foerster. Grendler then made it 2-0 with 13 minutes left in the period and she was assisted by Foerster and Rasmussen. Grendler then netted another one two minutes later and this time she was assisted by Foerster.

Rushmores lone goal of the game came with 13 seconds left as Izabelle Brandenberg scored. Hailey Romans assisted Brandenberg.

The Rangers had a 32-21 advantage in shots. Rorii Quam was in net for Brookings and she made 20 saves.

Brookings will play the Pierre Oahe Capitals in the semifinals on Friday at 6 p.m. The Capitals beat the Sioux Center Storm 3-1 on Friday. The championship game will be played on Saturday at 7 p.m., while the third-place game is at 4 p.m.
