VOLGA A Volga resident is facing a raft of charges in the wake of a Tuesday night incident in the town that involved speeding and driving into oncoming traffic.
Markcus Williams, 37, was arrested by deputies with the Brookings County Sheriffs Office and then taken by ambulance to be treated at Brookings Health Systems emergency room for unknown injuries, according to a Wednesday morning news release from the sheriffs office.
Brookings County States Attorney Dan Nelson confirmed that Williams is facing several charges: DUI second offense, driving while revoked, aggravated eluding, reckless driving, speeding and lane driving.
Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring noted that bond will be set at a later hearing and that alcohol is believed to have been a factor. He wrote that the incident occurred at 8:34 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. Highway 14 and Samara Avenue.
It was at that point a deputy tried to stop Williamss vehicle, a 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe, which was observed speeding and driving into oncoming traffic on U.S. 14 near Samara Avenue. Williams attempted to evade the deputy south on Samara Avenue, also known as 464th Avenue.
Sebring wrote that, at one point, Williamss vehicle became stuck in the ditch, but was able to get back on the roadway and attempted to travel north on Samara Avenue south of Volga. While traveling north, the vehicle again entered the ditch, hit a field approach and vaulted.
When the vehicle came to a stop, deputies were able to take Williams into custody. He was brought to the Brookings County Detention Center following treatment at the emergency room.
The incident remains under investigation by the sheriffs office, according to the release. Williams remained in the detention center as of Thursday morning.
