Ranger Roundup: Bantam B wins state title

The Brookings Rangers Bantam B team skated to a state title at home at the Larson Ice Center this past weekend, downing the top two seeds in the process.

Brookings 3, Rushmore 0

Brookings opened tourney play as the third seed and dispatched the sixth-seeded Thunder.

Jasper Pitts got the Rangers on the board in the first off a Maxx Anderson pass. Ty Harris added an unassisted shortie later in the period. Jackson Hahn capped the scoring in the third with assists credited to Anderson and Harris.

Isaac Haufschild got the shutout between the pipes and the Rangers outshot the team from Rapid City 43-9.

Brookings 4, Sioux Center 1

The Rangers avenged a pair of close regular season losses to the Storm with a convincing win.

After a scoreless first, the Rangers ripped off three quick goals in the second period. Harris scored twice and Deacon Trumbo converted a breakaway in the flurry. Jasper Pitts added a third period goal to ice it for Brookings.

Landon Schumacher had a pair of assists for the Rangers, while Pitts, Anderson and Trumbo each had one.

Warner Carroll got the win in net as Brookings outshot the Storm 30-15.

Brookings 4, Yankton 0

It was all Rangers in the state final as Brookings took a 4-0 lead through two periods and then clamped down in the neutral zone to secure the shutout.

Blaine Zweber got the Rangers on the board in the first off a nice feed from Liam Heiberger. Anderson added a shorthanted goal midway through the second off passes from Harris and Heiberger. Pitts scored the final two goals, one off a pass from Heiberger to complete the playmaker.

Carroll was back in net to stop all 14 Yankton shots and the Rangers got to celebrate on their home ice.

The state champion Rangers are: Jasper Pitts, Maxximillion Vanderbush, Landon Schumacher, Ty Harris, Deacon Trumbo, Kaeden Kalber, Beau Luvaas, Jackson Hahn, Blaine Zweber, Liam Heiberger, Elijah DeBoer, Maxx Anderson, Pierson Rohl, Warner Carroll and Isaac Haufschild. They are coached by Owen Schneider and Zach Struck.

Junior Varsity

The JV Rangers swept a pair of games over the weekend to finish their league campaign 16-3-1 heading into their state tourney.

Brookings 9, Brandon Valley 1

Jason Ready had two goals and a playmaker for the Rangers. Mauer Bartley had two goals and an assist, and Parker Nielsen found the net twice. Andrew Hahn had a goal and an assist and Cooper Schneider also scored for Brookings. Connor Buckley, Mason Diers and Mavrick Bortnem had two assists each, with single helpers credited to Ashton Baker and Rhys Heiberger.

Neil Trygstad and Paxtyn Pottorff split time in net, with Trygstad credited with the win. Brookings outshot the Ice Cats 45-10.

Brookings 9, Huron 0

The potent Rangers offense reeled off nine more goals on Sunday at Huron.

Kludt led the way with a hat trick and an assist. Weston Baker scored twice and Ashton Baker added a goal and an assist. Bortnem, Diers and Heiberger also scored for the Rangers.

Ready, Buckley and Parker Nielsen each had two assists, with Camden Reicks, Bartley, Heiberger and Lucas Hovelson recording assists.

Ryder Anderson earned the shutout as Brookings outshot the All Stars 54-5.

Bantam A

The league champion Bantam A Rangers dropped a tough state title game in Aberdeen.

Brookings 9, Watertown 1

In the state quarters, it was all Brookings over the 8-seed Lakers.

Ethan Foerster had four goals and Jack Lovseth had a hat trick and four assists for Brookings.

Carter Nielsen had a goal and an assist, Thor Zell a goal and two helpers and Weston Diers a goal and an assist. Colt VanMaanen, Colin Jacobson and Graham Gerlach were also credited with assists.

Jon Drew got the win in net as Brookings outshot Watertown 34-6.

Brookings 8, Aberdeen 1

The Rangers dominated the Cougars on their home ice in the semifinals.

Lovseth, Cannon Friedrich and Horn had two goals apiece. Diers and VanMaanen each found twine as well. Foerster and Atwood Ahmann were credited with assists.

Drew got the win between the pipes as the Rangers outshot the Cougars 26-13.

Rushmore 7, Brookings 5

The two teams treated the crowd to a true game of momentum in the state final. The Thunder stormed out to a 3-0 lead, only to see Brookings rally in the second and third periods to take a 5-3 lead. Rushmore would answer with a second run of their own, though, and skate away with a 7-5 victory.

Zell scored a pair of coals for Brookings, with Lovseth added a pair of assists and Foerster a goal and two assists. Nielson and Jacobson also scored for the Rangers, with single assists going to Friedrich and Gerlach.

Drew made 20 saves as the Thunder outshot the Rangers 27-22.

14U Girls

The Rangers made a run to the state finals, coming up one goal short in a championship loss.

Brookings 8, Sioux Center 2

The Rangers dispatched the host Storm. Khloe Ziegeldorf led the way with three goals and three assists. Grace DeVries added a pair of goals, and Jordyn Anderson, Lorelei Koch and Beatrix Hovey-Stubbles also scored.

Credit a pair of assists to Anderson, while Koch, Brooke Kruse, Kahlei Foerster, Ashton Otteson and Hovey-Stubbles had one each.

Avery Dentlinger got the win in net as Brookings outshot Sioux Center 34-14.

Brookings 8, Huron 0

It was all Rangers in the semifinal. Otteson had a goal and three assists, while DeVries added two goals and an apple. Ziegeldorf had a goal and an assist, as did Katie Vandersnick. Kruse had a pair of goals and Anderson added a goal and an assist. Kinley Foerster had an assist.

Dentlinger got the shutout in net as Brookings outshot the All Starts 33-12.

Sioux Falls 2, Brookings 1

The Rangers lost a thriller in the state final to the league champion Flyers.

After a scoreless first, Sioux Falls got on the board with 5:23 to play in the second.

The Rangers would tie the game up with 5:45 left to play in the game on an unassisted tally by Kruse, but the Flyers answered just 30 seconds later and held on.

Dentlinger made 24 saves as Brookings was outshot 26-22.
