Gabriel Stern comes in second at state, Owen Vandeweerd finishes fifth

RAPID CITY Brookings Gabriel Stern came in second place and Sioux Valleys Owen Vandeweerd came in fifth place in the Boys State Wrestling Tournament over the weekend.

Brookings

Gabriel Stern was the only Bobcat to place on the boys side. Stern came in second in the 175-pound weight class. He pinned Belle Forches Spencer Bush-Graslie in 1:25 in the first round. Stern then won a 14-0 major decision over Sioux Falls Lincolns Joseph Tunge in the quarterfinals before winning a 5-4 decision over Sturgis Browns Zhoel Irion in the semifinals. In the championship matchStern lost a 16-1 technical fall to OGormans Keenan Sheridan.

Micah Stern competed in the 120-pound weight class for the Bobcats. He lost his opening match to Mason Hagen of Sturgis Brown as he was pinned in 5:09. Stern then won a 6-5 decision over Braedy Sievers of Dakota Valley in his first consolation match before getting pinned by Mitchells Noah Bennett in 3:52.

Jacob Milliron took the mat in the 132-pound weight class for Brookings. He was pinned in 5:18 by Aberdeen Centrals Porter Lozenski in his opening match. Milliron then won a 17-1 technical fall over Dell Rapids Charlie Person in the consolation bracket before losing a 13-0 major decision to Rapid City Centrals Luther Morrison.

Mason Mathis competed in the 150-pound weight class. He was pinned by Hayden Whiting of West Central in 3:43 in his opening match. Mathis then won a 13-0 major decision over Sturgis Browns Kalvin Ketelsen before losing an 11-2 major decision to Brayden Collins Rapid City Stevens.

Blake Kannegieter represented the Bobcats at 190. He lost a 9-4 decision to Sioux Falls Jeffersons Anneyso Ahmed in the opening match of the tournament. Kannegieter then pinned Dusty Rose of Chamberlain in 3:42 before losing a 19-3 technical fall to Rapid City Stevens Cooper Myers.

Zach Hagemann competed in two matches in the 215-pound weight class. He was pinned in 38 seconds by Rapid City Stevens Ayden Kellogg and then lost a 7-0 decision to Sturgis Browns Gunnar Sarkela.

In the heavyweight division Dylan Reynolds competed in two matches. He was pinned in 1:42 by Tea Areas Chase DeBoer and pinned in 2:26 by Lucas Giersberg of Douglas/Rapid City Christian/New Underwood.

Sioux Valley

Owen Vandeweerd was the lone competitor at State for the Cossack boys and he came in fifth place in the 285-pound weight class. In his opening match he won a 7-3 decision over Breckin Culbert of Parkston. He then lost a 1-0 decision to Gabe Reeve of St. Thomas More in the quarterfinals.

Vandeweerd won a 14-0 decision over Randall Powers of Bon Homme/Avon in his opening consolation match. He then won a 4-3 decision over Tri Valleys before getting pinned by Lincoln Dikoff of Faulkton Area in the consolation semifinals. In the fifth place match Vandeweerd got revenge as he won a sudden victory over Reeve of St. Thomas More.
