BROOKINGS The Brookings boys basketball team picked up their first win of the season on Friday night as the Bobcats beat Douglas 66-56.
It was very awesome [to get that first win], said Brookings head coach Mike McCarty. Its been a tough year. Weve been close in many games and have had leads in many games, including the fourth quarter in some games, but we just werent able to close them out. It felt really good to finally finish one out and complete the victory.
As McCarty mentioned, the Bobcats executed in the fourth quarter. Brookings led 43-38 heading into the fourth quarter. They pushed the lead to 47-38 but then a 6-0 run from the Patriots cut the lead to three with 5:53 to go. Brookings would answer with a 9-0 run of its own to make it 56-44 with three minutes left and that was enough of a cushion for the Bobcats.
McCarty said the Bobcats did a good job of running the offense and then hitting free throws down the stretch.
We were able to execute on the offensive end. We got some good shot opportunities and then down the stretch we were able to make some free throws that were able to seal the game, McCarty said.
Brookings got off to a fast start as four 3-pointers in the first three and a half minutes gave the Bobcats a 12-0 lead. They led 21-7 at the end of the first quarter.
McCarty said the fast start came from shot making and getting stops.
Our guys were confident at home and we made a couple shots right away and had a few go in after that. We were also able to get a couple stops on the defensive end. We were able to get off to a fast start and that really helped, McCarty said.
The Bobcats extended the lead to 32-17 by halftime. Douglas fought its way back into the game in the third as the Patriots outscored the Bobcats 21-11 and cut the lead to five heading into the fourth.
Brookings shot 42.3% from the field and was 6-of-20 from three. The Bobcats were led by Brodie McCarty who had 23 points and nine rebounds. Bergan Tetzlaff had 13 points and 15 rebounds. Drew Johnson had 14 points. Jones Huntimer had seven points and 10 rebounds.
The Bobcats held Douglas to 31.3% shooting and the Patriots were 9-of-25 from three. McCarty said his defense was in sync and then they were able to crash the defensive glass.
I thought we communicated well and contested shots. We did a good job of rebounding the ball.
Isaiah Brewer led the Patriots with 16 points. Caden Walters had 10 points and eight boards. Brock Morgan had 11 points.
Brookings had a 44-35 advantage in rebounds. The Bobcats had 14 turnovers and the Patriots had nine. Brookings was 16-of-23 at the free throw line and Douglas was 7-of-11.

The start of the game and the end of the game were tough for the Bobcats on Saturday.
Spearfish outscored Brookings 25-17 in the opening quarter and then took a 36-26 lead into halftime. The Spartans then led 38-27 at the end of the third but outscored the Bobcats 21-10 in the final frame.
Brookings shot 35% from the field and was 2-of-22 from beyond the arc. The Bobcats were led by Tetzlaff who had 19 points and 16 rebounds. Brodie McCarty had eight points.
Spearfish shot 44.1% from the field and was 4-of-17 from deep. Kamren Davis led the Spartans with 21 points and five rebounds. Kade Vavruska had 12 points and seven boards.
Brookings finished the season 1-19. Despite the loss in their final game of the season, McCarty hopes that the Bobcats can use some momentum heading into next season after winning against Douglas.
We had two seniors on the team, so a majority of our team is going to be back next year. I thought we did a lot of positive things this year, both on the offensive and defensive end. We have a lot of things in place that we can be successful with moving forward, McCarty said.
