Bruce man hurt in crash involving railroad bridge

BROOKINGS COUNTY Its not every day that you hear about a vehicle getting stuck under a railroad bridge, but thats exactly what happened to a Bruce resident the morning of Feb. 25.

Joshua Johnson, 34, was taken to the emergency room at Brookings Health System with unknown injuries after the 2015 Chevy Silverado he was driving went through the stop sign at the intersection of U.S. Highway 14 and 466th Avenue, according to a news release from the Brookings County Sheriffs Office. The incident occurred at 6:30 a.m.

Johnson had been driving south on 466th Avenue when he crossed over U.S. 14 and entered the south ditch, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring wrote. Through investigation, it appeared Johnson didnt see the southbound stop sign, likely due to thick fog, crossed four lanes of travel and entered the south ditch.

Once in the ditch, the pickups throttle became stuck and the Silverado continued south until it became lodged under a railroad bridge that spans the Big Sioux River. The bridge is owned by the Rapid City, Pierre and Eastern railroad company.

Johnsons pickup received disabling damage, and the incident is being investigated by the sheriffs office. Other responding agencies were the Volga Fire Department and Brookings Ambulance.
