PIERRE Two sets of siblings, who advanced from the Brookings Elks Lodge No. 1490 contest, became state champions at Saturdays South Dakota State Elks Hoop Shoot.
Carter and Camden Cadwell and Caralina and Chase Mebius now move on to the Elks Regional Hoop Shoot in Rapid City on March 8. They will compete against state champions from Montana and North Dakota for the right to compete at the National Hoop Shoot in Chicago in April.
Carter Cadwell won the 8-9-year-old boys division, hitting 24-for-25 free throws, beating the second-place finisher by three shots. Competing in the 10-11-year-old boys division, Carters brother Cadwell hit 21 shots, beating his closest opponent by just one make.
Caralina Mebius won the 8-9-year-old girls age group with 21 made shots, and her closest competitors finished with 19 made baskets. Chase, her older brother, was a perfect 25-for-25 to win the 12-13-year-old boys division. He beat his top competitor by six free throws.
The 10-11-year old girls division was won by Dion Wammen from the Deadwood Elks Lodge No. 508. Emily Crawford from the Rapid City Elks Lodge No. 1187 advanced from the 12-13-year old girls division.
In total, 40 kids, all winners of local lodge contests, competed in Saturdays event.
The Hoop Shoot is an annual signature kids’ program sponsored by the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, a national fraternal organization that is more than 150 years old.
