South Dakota State goes 0-3 in tournament in Arkansas

CONWAY, Ark. The South Dakota State softball team lost all three games in the Michelle Short & Adam Brown Tournament hosted by Central Arkansas over the past two days.

The Jackrabbits lost to Central Arkansas and Oklahoma State on Sunday and then fell again to UCA on Monday.

SDSU is now 5-7 and will play at Tulsa on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Sunday

Central Arkansas 8, SDSU 0 (5 inn.)

Central Arkansas scored three runs in the first inning, then another five across the fourth and fifth innings, to run rule SDSU in game one.

The Bears recorded seven hits while benefitting from four Jackrabbit errors. Central Arkansas also stole seven bases and drew five walks all while not striking out at the plate.

Four Jacks registered hits in Amanda Vacanti, Abby Gentry, Alli Boyle and Alissa Wernz. SDSU starter Akayla Barnard was credited with the loss in the circle. Vacanti pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief allowing a run (none earned) in that stretch.

No. 11 Oklahoma State 5, SDSU 2

The Jackrabbits got off to a strong start in the top of the first. Mia Jarecki hit a lead-off home run to give South Dakota State its first run of the game. Three batters later, and with two outs, Brooke Dumont smoked a 2-2 pitch over the fence for another SDSU solo home run.

Jackrabbit starting pitcher Tayler Baker pitched tough against the loaded Cowgirl lineup. She allowed a run apiece in the second and third innings, but only one was earned.

The two sides remained tied through five innings. Baker was eventually chased out of the circle in the sixth as Oklahoma State loaded the bases. Reliever Madi Mangulis came on to try to get the Jacks out of the jam, but the Cowgirls scored three runs on two hits, two walks and a hit by pitch.

Madi Conklin got on base via single in the top of the seventh, but the Cowgirls limited the threat to that on their way to the win.

Dumont finished with two of South Dakota States four hits in the meeting versus No. 11/13 Oklahoma State. Baker picked up the loss as she threw 5-plus innings. She gave up just three hits, but allowed five runs (four earned) and walked seven batters.

Monday

Central Arkasas 6, SDSU 3

South Dakota State was unable to overcome a three-run first inning by Central Arkansas as the Bears defeated the Jackrabbits, 6-3, on Monday at Farris Field. The game served as the finale of the Michelle Short & Adam Brown Tournament.

Central Arkansas jumped out in front early with a pair of doubles scoring the first three runs of the game with no outs recorded in the bottom of the first. It forced SDSU to go to an arm in relief in Amanda Vacanti. The freshman got the Jacks out of the frame by limiting the damage.

Abby Gentry and Vacanti hit solo home runs in the second and third innings, respectively, to cut the deficit to 3-2.

The fourth frame saw the Bears tack on a run off Vacanti whose day was done after three innings worked. She allowed three hits and struck out one while not walking any batters.

SDSUs Hailey Herman worked 1 1/3 innings in the circle and allowed two runs, but neither were earned. Kierra Goos pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up two hits and a walk, but provided a scoreless appearance for the Jacks.

The Jackrabbits final opportunity came in the top of the seventh. SDSU loaded the bases with three walks and a fourth drawn walk, this time by Madi Conklin, plated a run to cut the score to 6-3. The bases were still loaded for SDSU with two outs, but UCA pitcher Julia Petty closed out a complete game with an infield pop up.
