Ranger girls swept by Oahe

PIERRE The Brookings Rangers girls varsity team was swept by the Pierre Oahe Capitals over the weekend.

The Capitals beat the Rangers 4-2 on Saturday and then won 5-2 on Sunday.

This was the final two games of the regular season for the Rangers and up next will be the state tournament in Watertown, which begins on March 7. Brookings is second place in the standings with a record of 15-6.

Saturday

Pierre Oahe 4, Brookings 2

The Capitals jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first period and didnt look back on Saturday.

Brylee Kafka got the scoring going for Oahe with 12:48 left in the first period and she was assisted by Dakota McEntaffer. Kallee Behm then made it a 2-0 game with 8:11 left in the period and she was assisted by Aubrey Stewart. Sawyer Triplett cut the lead in half with 4:44 left in the period and it was an unassisted power play goal. However, Emily Nemec then scored an unassisted goal with 2:50 left in the period to make it 3-1.

Kinzey Grendler made it a one-goal game with 13:36 left in the period. It came on the power play and she was assisted by Julissa Peterson. Kafka then put the game away with 42 seconds left as she scored an empty net goal. She was assisted by Bertsch.

The Capitals held a 24-20 advantage in shots. Rorii Quam was in net for the Rangers and made 20 saves.

Sunday

Pierre Oahe 5, Brookings 2

Three unanswered goals in the final 22 minutes led the Capitals to the victory on Sunday.

The Capitals opened the scoring five and half minutes into the game as Kafka scored an unassisted goal. Miyah Foerster then tied the game three minutes later and she was assisted by Grendler and Shauna Pederson. Kafka regained the lead for the Capitals on the power play with 8:17 to go in the period. She was assisted by Bertsch.

Foerster then netted her second goal of the game and made it 2-2 with 16:17 left in the second period. It came on the power play and she was assisted by Anna Rasmussen and Grendler.

Kafka then scored two more goals. She scored with four minutes left in the second and was assisted by McEntaffer. Her fourth goal came with just under 11 minutes left in the game and she was assisted by Mallory Lehrkamp and Brenna Ullmann. Bertsch made the final 5-2 as she scored on the power play with 6:15 to go. She was assisted by Kafka and Behm.

The Capitals outshot the Rangers 39-15. Quam had 34 saves in the loss.
