BROOKINGS On Feb. 27 at 6 p.m., in honor of Black History Month, the Brookings Public Library will host a historical reenactment entitled Katherine Davis Chapman Tillman – Yanktons Prolific Lyric Poet and Race Writer, performed by South Dakota Humanities Council scholar Joyce Jefferson.
Born in Mound City, Illinois, in 1870, Katherine Chapman moved to Yankton as a child. Kate, who began writing at a young age, became a prolific writer of poems, plays, short stories, and essays. The audience will enjoy Kates poetry as Jefferson interprets Mrs. Chapman Tillmans work as if she were living today.
Jefferson is a seasoned performer who has researched and developed historical portrayals of African American women she calls “sheroes.” Her portrayals, performed in period costume, show phenomenal women who, throughout history, overcame the most challenging circumstances to accomplish the extraordinary.
This program is made possible by the South Dakota Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
