Brooklyn Meyer’s career day leads Jackrabbits to Summit League regular season title

KANSAS CITY Brooklyn Meyers career-high 34 points led the South Dakota State womens basketball team over Kansas City on Saturday and allowed the Jackrabbits to clinch their third-straight Summit League regular season title.

It was another strong second half for the Jacks (24-3, 14-0) as they outscored the Roos (11-18, 7-7) 41-24 in the final 20 minutes and came away with an 80-60 victory.

SDSU jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the first two and a half minutes of the game. The Jacks then led 23-15 at the end of the first quarter. The Roos then got things going in the second quarter as they cut the lead to 29-28 with 5:54 to play in the first half. Kansas Citys first lead of the game came with 2:11 left in the first half at 34-33. but SDSU led 39-36 at the break.

It was 48-44 with three minutes left in the second quarter and the Jacks outscored the Roos 8-3 in the final three minutes to make it 56-47 heading into the fourth. SDSU then used a 15-4 run to make it 73-53 with just over four minutes left. That was the largest lead of the game for the Jacks and was enough of a cushion to seal their 61st win-in-a-row over a Summit League opponent.

Brooklyn Meyer was 13-of-16 from the field and also had five rebounds. Haleigh Timmer had 16 points and five rebounds. Paige Meyer had 11 points, seven assists and five rebounds and Madison Mathiowetz had eight points.

SDSU shot 49.2% from the field. The Jacks struggled from beyond the arc as they were 6-of-26 from deep. SDSU was 14-of-22 at the free throw line.

The Roos shot 41.7% from the field and were 4-of-9 from three. Alayna Contreras led Kansas City with 24 points. Emani Bennett had 14 points.

SDSU will close out the regular season next week. The Jacks will host Denver and St. Thomas on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
