BROOKINGS A strong third quarter was the difference between Pierre and Brookings on Tuesday night in girls basketball as the Governors beat the Cossacks 72-59.
Each team scored 15 points in the first quarter. The Bobcats then went on an 8-2 run to open the second quarter. Pierre would come back and tie the game at 31-31 and Brookings took a 34-32 lead into halftime.
It was then 37-37 with 6:21 left in the third when the Governors went on a 14-3 run to close out the quarter. Pierre in total outscored Brookings 19-6 in the third and took a 51-40 lead into the fourth. The Governors then outscored the Bobcats 21-19 in the final quarter.
Brookings shot 46.8% from the field and was 6-of-23 from three. Logan Smidt had 13 points to lead the Bobcats. Macy Even and Julia Burns each had 11 points and six rebounds. Kymber Buys had eight points and Sloan McLagan had seven points. Tess Burns had seven points and eight rebounds.
Pierre shot 54.3% from the field and was 12-of-26 from beyond the arc. Lennix DuPris had a big night for the Governors with 31 points. Emery Larson had 22 points and Molly Olson had nine points.
The Bobcats had 32 rebounds and the Governors had 20. Brookings had 22 turnovers and Pierre had 15. The Bobcats were 9-of-15 at the free throw line and the Governors were 10-of-12.
Brookings dropped to 9-8 on the season. The Bobcats are in 10th place in Class AA with three games to play. Theyll travel to Aberdeen on Friday night to take on Aberdeen Central at 7 p.m.
