Ranger boys take care of business against Brandon Valley, Watertown

BROOKINGS The Brookings Rangers boys varsity team picked up a pair of large victories over the weekend as they beat Brandon Valley on Friday and Watertown on Saturday.

The Rangers beat the Ice Cats 10-1 and then topped the Lakers 7-1. Brookings is now 14-4 and tied for second with Sioux Falls West in the South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association Standings. The Rangers are eight points behind the Rushmore Thunder for first place.

Brookings has two weekends of play left before the State Tournament. The Rangers will play two games this upcoming weekend as theyll host Mitchell in Brookings at 8 p.m. on Friday and then will head to Pierre on Saturday to play the Oahe Capitals at 4:30 p.m.

Friday

Brookings 10, Brandon Valley 1

The Rangers scored six first-period goals and cruised to victory on Friday night.

Cooper Deatherage got the scoring going for the Rangers just over four minutes into the game. He took a pass from Jay Harris and then put it into the back of the net. Riley Linstad made it 2-0 two minutes later and he was assisted by Cody Jacobson and Nolan Krogman. Talon Hyde then gave the Rangers a three-goal lead with 8:42 left in the first and he was assisted by Linstad.

Jacobson made it 4-0 four minutes later and he was assisted by Deatherage. Max Miller scored the lone goal for Brandon Valley with just under four minutes left in the first and he was assisted by Nathan Fogarty. Linstad then made it 5-1 with 1:59 left and was assisted by Hyde and Luke Honkomp. Jackson Heller scored the final goal of the period for the Rangers and he was assisted by Harris.

The Rangers scored three goals in the second and one in the third. Cade Zweber made it 7-1 three and a half minutes into the second and he was assisted by Krogman and Tre Christopherson. Harris scored his second goal of the game with 12 minutes left in the period and was assisted by Heller and Honkomp. Parker Nielsen scored in the final minute of the second and was assisted by Hyde and Honkomp. The final goal of the game for Brookings came with 4:50 left and it was a power play goal by Linstad. He was assisted by Maxten Jensen and Honkomp.

The Bobcats had a 51-10 advantage in shots. Matthew Bothe was in net for the Rangers and had nine saves.

Saturday

Brookings 7, Watertown 1

The Rangers used a strong third period to fully pull away from Watertown on Saturday night.

Hyde gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal with 14:20 left in the first period. The Lakers then tied things up with 30 seconds left in the period. The goal was scored by Colton Kasuske and it was assisted by Tyler Roberts.

The Rangers scored two goals in the second. Krogman scored an unassisted goal with 10:11 left in the period. Harris then made it 3-1 on the power play and he was assisted by Honkomp and Hyde.

Brookings added four more goals in the final period. Harris scored just over five minutes into the third and he was assisted by Heller. Christopherson extended the lead to 5-1 with 4:49 left in the game and was assisted by Zweber and Waylon Carroll. Heller scored one minute and 14 seconds later and he was assisted by Deatherage and Harris. The final goal of the night for the Rangers was scored by Nielsen and he was assisted by Krogman and Jason Ready.

It was another big advantage in shots for the Rangers as they had 41 and the Lakers had eight. Ryder Anderson was in net for Brookings and had seven saves.
