Ranger girls beat Mitchell, Sioux Center in Brookings

BROOKINGS The Brookings Rangers girls varsity team extended their win streak to 10 games over the weekend as they picked up two victories.

The Rangers beat Mitchell 7-1 on Saturday and then took down Sioux Center 3-1 on Sunday. Brookings is now 15-4 on the season and is in second place in the South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association. The Rangers are six points behind Sioux Falls for first place. Brookings will close out the regular season with a pair of games at Pierre Oahe this upcoming weekend. The two teams will play at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday and 11:45 a.m. on Sunday.

Friday

Brookings 7, Mitchell 1

Neither team scored in the first period and then the Rangers outscored the Marlins 4-1 in the second.

Kinzey Grendler started the scoring for the Rangers with an unassisted goal just over a minute and a half into the second period. Miyah Foerster then scored an unassisted goal to make it 2-0 with 14:29 left in the period. Virginia Wyatt cut the lead to 2-1 with a power play goal with 11 minutes left in the second. She was assisted by Tisten Zimmer.

The Rangers would then score two goals in a span of one minute and 37 seconds. Emily Meyer made it 3-0 with an assist from Khloe Ziegeldorf and Grandler pushed the lead to 4-1 with an assist from Sawyer Triplett. Grendlers goal came on the power play.

Triplett then scored two goals of her own in the third period. The first one came with 13:37 left in the game and she was assisted by Ashton Otteson and Anna Rasmussen. The second one was with just under four minutes left and she was assisted by Foerster. Foerster then scored a goal of her own with seven seconds left in the game. It came on the power play and she was unassisted.

Brookings held a small advantage in shots at 27-25. Rorii Quam was in net for the Rangers and made 24 saves.

Saturday

Brookings 3, Sioux Center 1

The Rangers were able to get a two-goal advantage late in the second period and then held off the Storm in the third period on Sunday afternoon.

Brookings held a 1-0 lead after the first period. Grace Devries scored with 10:32 left in the period and she was assisted by Grendler.

Julissa Peterson gave Brookings a two-goal lead with just over 10 minutes left in the second period. She was assisted by Brynnlea Peterson. Brooklyn Byl cut the lead to 2-1 with a power play goal with 2:08 left in the period and she was assisted by Corinne McCord. However, Triplett scored 23 seconds later to push the lead back to two and she was unassisted.

Neither team scored in the third period. Brookings had 43 shots and Sioux Center had 27. Quam had 26 shots in the win for the Rangers.
