The Arlington unit recently recognized Gerri Murphy as Legionette of the Year for the Edgar Herrick Arlington American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 42 in District 6 for the following reasons:
Oh, the things you can do that are good for you! Dr. Seuss
This exemplifies the amazing things that Murphy has done for Arlington Auxiliary Unit 42.
Murphy has been a lifelong member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Her mother signed her up when she was a child under her father who served during the Korea War, stationed in Germany.
She has belonged to the Arlington Auxiliary Unit 42 for 56 years and during those years she has become a vital member. She was a junior member and then became a senior member.
Just a few of the good things that Murphy has done for the auxiliary in the past and present:
Currently secretary from 2021 to present (always present)
Secretary from 1997 to 2010
Secretary from 1984 to 1996
Historian
Junior member leader
President 1996-97
Legionette of Year 1994
Her involvement in 2024
Just after Memorial Day, poppy sales, dinner and program the organization met to plan for the new year in June. Murphy is one of the leaders who takes this seriously and keeps thing on track. Her minutes are stellar.
She is in charge of scheduling the booklet that goes to each member with a list of members, meeting dates, programs, etc.
She encourages and actively pursues new members for our auxiliary. She also has daughters and granddaughters as members.
The membership meeting in September is an invitation to bring potential new members Murphy has brought members who have joined.
The unit bought medallions to put on all auxiliary members graves this last year and Murphy was a significant help in identifying members from the past that needed markers.
She is active and present at all our activities: Memorial Day dinner, program, poppy sales, Bingo lunch, Veterans Day get-togethers at post home, Christmas party for auxiliary, Halloween party (new again in 2024 after many years), Christmas Kids Giving (new for first time in 2024), Valentine’s Day Biscuits and Gravy for veterans (new in 2025), Girls State, scholarships, donations to the school, breakfast for the bicyclists stopping Arlington (new in 2024), and the many other activities that were held.
Whenever there is anything that needs done, she is there to lend a hand. It doesnt matter if its American Legion Auxiliary, school or community.
Murphy definitely exemplifies Oh the things you can do that are good for you! which are the values and ideals of the American Legion Auxiliary and whose accomplishments significantly impact the work in Unit 42 of Arlington.
