SIOUX FALLS The Sioux Valley boys basketball team came up short against De Smet on Saturday in the Heritage Classic at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.
The Cossacks fell 59-52 to the Bulldogs. The difference was the second and third quarters. The Cossacks led 14-11 at the end of the first quarter but then De Smet outscored Sioux Valley 19-12 in the second quarter. The Bulldogs extended the lead to 46-38 by the end of the third quarter. The Cossacks had a 14-13 advantage in the final quarter.
Sioux Valley shot 39.6% from the field and was 7-of-22 from beyond the arc. The Cossacks were led by Maverick Nelson who had 20 points and seven rebounds. Brady Hiltunen had 10 points. Carter Sapp and Brock Christopherson each had eight points.
De Smet shot 41.8% from the field and was 6-of-18 from three. The Bulldogs were led by Grant Wilkinson who had 24 points and 15 rebounds. Ganon Henrich had 15 points and Carter Wilkinson had 13 points.
The Bulldogs had 40 rebounds and the Cossacks had 22. Sioux Valley had eight turnovers and De Smet had 16. The Cossacks were 3-of-7 at the free throw line and the Bulldogs were 7-of-13.
The Cossacks dropped to 7-7 with the loss. They play at Flandreau on Thursday at 6:15 p.m.
