BROOKINGS The Brookings Rangers boys varsity team lost a pair of games against the Rushmore Thunder over the weekend at the Larson Ice Center.
The Rangers lost each game 4-1. Theyre now 11-4 and play at Sioux Falls West on Friday at 8:15 p.m.
Friday
Rushmore 4, Brookings 1
The Thunders scored three goals in the first period. Brixton Steen made it 1-0 87 seconds into the game and he was assisted by Wyatt Reeder and Mason McGregor. McGregor then scored a goal of his own with 6:46 left in the first period and was assisted by Colton Merchen and Reeder. Reeder then scored 40 seconds later and was assisted by Thomas Rogers and Caeyn Howard.
Merchen made it 4-0 with 3:07 left in the second period. He was assisted by Steen. The lone goal for the Rangers came with 3:32 left in the game as Cody Jacobson put one into the back of the net. He was assisted by Nolan Krogman and Cooper Deatherage.
The Thunder outshot the Rangers 35-14. Ryder Anderson was in net for the Rangers and he had 31 saves.
Saturday
Rushmore 4, Brookings 1
Tre Christopherson gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead just over five minutes into the first period. He was assisted by Caleb Johnson and Luke Honkomp.
Merchen then tied the game with 5:34 left in the first and he was unassisted. Reeder then gave the Thunder the lead with a goal with 1:25 left in the period and was assisted by Howard.
The Thunder scored two more goals in the second period. Andrew Welling scored with 7:48 left in the period and was assisted by Reeder. Welling then pushed the lead to 4-1 with 4:49 left in the period and it was a shorthanded goal. He was assisted by Merchen.
Rushmore had a 33-19 advantage in shots. Matthew Bothe was in net for the Rangers and had 29 saves.
