Truck enters open water on Oak Lake

BROOKINGS COUNTY Yes, its January, but theres still open water on some Brookings-area lakes, as one man learned much to his chagrin on Oak Lake on Saturday night.

He was traveling in his 2015 Chevy 1500 from one ice fish house to another, according to a Monday news release from the Brookings County Sheriffs Office, when he noticed open water ahead of him on the lake, which is northeast of White.

He was unable to stop in time and went into the water, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring wrote. The man, who wasnt injured, was able to get out of the pickup and onto stable ice.

Ice conditions vary widely and water remains open in spots on many lakes in eastern South Dakota, Sebring wrote. With ice conditions changing daily, it is important to know your path and follow all safety precautions.

The sheriffs office is investigating the incident. The White Fire Department also responded to the incident, which occurred at 11:03 p.m.
