One hurt in Volga fire

VOLGA A Friday afternoon blaze in Volga injured one person and damaged an apartment, according to a Monday news release from the Brookings County Sheriffs Office.

The incident was reported at 3:05 p.m. in the 500 block of East U.S. Highway 14, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring wrote, adding that a passerby noticed smoke coming from the apartment building.

A resident leaving the building asked the passerby to call 911. Crews were able to respond and quickly extinguish the fire. The resident was taken by ambulance to the emergency room at Brookings Health System for unknown injuries.

No other residents were home at the time of the fire, Sebring wrote. Most of the fire damage was limited to one apartment; other units are still awaiting damage estimates.

The sheriffs office is continuing to investigate the cause of the fire. Other responding agencies were the Volga Fire Department and Brookings Ambulance.
