Young runners dominate Indoor 5K in Brookings

BROOKINGS Two talented young high school runners took titles at the 10th Prairie Striders Indoor 5K on Saturday at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in Brookings.

Overall winner and first-place male was Reid Hammerquist, a 16-year-old sophomore from Tea, who finished in 17:12 (X pace). The time beat his state cross country time of 17:31 (43rd place) and his cross country PR of 17:14 in 2023. He led from start to finish, but was challenged for most of the race by Trevin Lounsbury, 16, of Brookings.

Lounsburys teammate, Dylan Haar, 14, of Brookings, ended up finishing second with a time of 17:33. Third place overall and first-place masters runner was Josh Scholten, 41, of Marshall, Minn.

Winning the womens division was Grace McElroy, 14, of Watertown, with a time of 19:09. The eighth grader finished 11th at the state cross country meet with a time of 19:35.

Saturdays time placed her seventh overall and gave her the family crown. Her mom, Jenn McElroy, 43, won the womens masters division with a time of 23:40. Her dad, Owen McElroy, 42, was third in the male masters division with a time of 19:47. Sister Kate, 16, was third in the womens open division with a time of 21:52.

Other top finishers were Kaden Christian, 15, of Tea, third in mens open and fourth overall; Tim Fryer, 46, of Hendricks, Minn., second in mens masters; Gabriella Auspos, 34, of Spicer, Minn., second in womens open; Maggie Veldkamp, 40, of Brookings, second in womens masters; and Mary Held, 63, of Aurora, third in womens masters.

There were a total of 34 finishers plus three in the untimed walking division.
