Brookings-area OLLI classes expose members to new ideas, experiences

In 2000, the Bernard Osher Foundation looked into continuing education programs targeted toward older adults. It was found that the desire of many of those surveyed, especially retirees, was in learning for the joy of learning without exams or grades and keeping in touch with a larger world. This inquiry resulted in the formation of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

Through OLLI, members learn for the love of it by engaging their mind, stimulating their senses, and thriving in a relaxed academic environment. This is accomplished through a varied and affordable program of classes, tours, lectures, films and active-learning sessions. OLLI also joins community members together in social gatherings for fun and informal activities.

There are currently 124 OLLIs in the U.S., with OLLI being in all 50 states. The OLLI in Sioux Falls was established in 2006, Brookings in 2008 and Vermillion followed shortly thereafter. So far, there are 512 individuals enrolled as members in the South Dakota OLLI organization.
