Ranger girls come in 2nd in home tournament

BROOKINGS The Brookings Rangers girls varsity team came in second in the Brookings Winter Classic over the weekend.

The Rangers beat Edina and Stillwater in their pool play games. They then took down Stillwater again in the semifinals before falling to Omaha in the championship game.

Brookings plays a pair of home games this weekend. The Rangers will take on Aberdeen on Friday at 8:15 p.m. and Watertown on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Pool Play

Brookings 7, Edina 0

It was total domination for the Rangers in the first game of pool play.

Kinzey Grendler got the scoring going for the Rangers with 13:01 left in the first period. That goal was assisted by Miyah Foerster. Julissa Peterson then made it 2-0 with 8:16 left in the period and Grendler had the assist.

Foerster then got in on the scoring three minutes into the second period and she was assisted by Grendler. Brookings scored two more goals in the second period. Ava Kahle made it 3-0 and she was assisted by Sawyer Triplett and Anna Rasmussen. Grendler then netted her second goal of the game and it was again assisted by Foerster, making it 5-0 heading into the third.

The final two goals for the Rangers came in the final seven minutes of the game. Triplett scored and was assisted by Maya Edmison. Foerster then scored an unassisted goal to make the final 7-0.

Brookings outshot Edina 35-10. Rorii Quam had the shutout in net for the Rangers.

Brookings 3, Stillwater 1

All three of the Rangers goals came in the first period.

Foerster put Brookings up 1-0 a minute and a half into the game and the goal was unassisted. Triplett then made it 2-0 with 6:09 left in the period. That goal was assisted by Kahle and Edmison. A little under three minutes later Triplett scored again and it was assisted by Kahle again as well.

The lone goal for the Ponies came in third period as Clara Wipperfurth scored and Aida Bonneson assisted.

Brookings outshot Stillwater 41-23. Quam had 22 saves in the win.

Semifinals

Brookings 3, Stillwater 1

The Rangers scored three unanswered goals to advance to the championship.

Alya Seeger put the Ponies up 1-0 with 13:12 left in the second period. A little over six minutes later Grendler tied the game. That goal was assisted by Foerster. Then with 3:24 left in the period Grendler gave the Rangers the lead with a goal that was assisted by Julissa Peterson.

The Rangers wouldnt extend the lead until under five minutes left in the game. Anna Rasmussen put Brookings up 3-1 with 4:53 to play and that was the final.

Brookings had 41 shots and Stillwater had 31. Quam had 30 saves in the victory.

Championship

Omaha 2, Brookings 1

The Lady Lancers scored two goals in the second period and the Rangers werent able to complete the comeback in the third.

Aspen Smutz scored both of the goals for Omaha. Her first goal came with 16:11 left in the second period and it was assisted by Hailey Coe. The second one came with 6:33 to play in the period and it was unassisted.

Abriana Peterson netted the lone goal for Brookings. It came with 3:36 left in the game and it was assisted by Lorlei Koch.

Brookings had a 22-20 advantage in shots. Quam had 18 saves in the loss.
