Scouts in Brookings raising funds for summer camping trip

BROOKINGS Brookings Boy Scout Troop 1 is hoping to attend Medicine Mountain Scout Ranch this summer a sojourn that will cost them $400 per scout. Assistant Scoutmaster Dave Hafenbreidel said scouts will serve at a Sunday breakfast fundraiser to offset those expenses.

Itd be nice to take that burden off of them, he said. The kids themselves, they have to participate in the fundraisers. Thats part of it, too. They have to come and put in their time in order to earn the money.

The scouts will work at the Brookings VFW Jan. 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Meal costs vary based on the menu, ranging from $8 to $10.

We serve and clean up afterwards, and we get the proceeds from the event after costs, Hafenbreidel said.

This marks the latest in a year-long series of fundraising efforts.

Weve done a pancake breakfast back in May, Hafenbreidel said. Weve been doing honor guards at different functions, and we get a little money from those sometimes. Weve gone to service clubs and done presentations about the scouting program, and they donate money to us too. A little bit here and there. It adds up.

Camp reservations are due March 12. The scouts hope to embark June 15.

We try to vary it and go to different places, because going to the same place every year gets boring, Hafenbreidel said. (Medicine Mountain Scout Ranch) has an overnight hike up into the hills They offer a wilderness survival course, and they have a course which is like a zipline and a climbing tower. So things like that.

Hafenbreidel who has been involved in scouting for more than 50 years said the kids learn a variety of skills.

We have to prepare our own meals, so they have to learn how to cook, he said.

If youre out in the wilderness you dont have a microwave, so youve got to learn. And also cleaning up after yourself, so you dont get sick.

He said seeing kids blossom into leaders is the best part.

Each kid eventually will be in a leadership position in the troop, Hafenbreidel said. We have three right now that are working on their Eagle Scout requirements. Thats the pinnacle to become an eagle scout Its very heartwarming. Im an Eagle Scout, too. So I know what theyre going through.

He said anyone interested in joining or supporting the local troop is welcome to attend meetings or to contact him.

We meet Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Hafenbreidel said. People can come by and check us out there. Or they can get ahold of me personally 605-690-6735.
