Light pole crashes onto interstate in Sioux Falls, killing driver

SIOUX FALLS A man has died after a light pole struck his vehicle on Interstate 229 in Sioux Falls on Thursday.

According to a news release from the South Dakota Departmetn of Public Safety, a contractor was working on a large tower light pole along I-229 near exit 9 when the pole began to lean and fell across the northbound lanes, striking a passing vehicle. The driver, a 60-year-old Sioux Falls man, sustained fatal injuries.

The names of the persons involved have not been released pending notification of family members.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary.

The Highway Patrol is an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
