Dan Jackson hired as Jackrabbit head football coach

BROOKINGS South Dakota State has hired Dan Jackson as its 22nd football coach, the school announced on Tuesday night.

Jackson was a linebacker at SDSU from 2003-05. He joined the SDSU coaching staff in 2012 as a graduate assistant. Jackson was elevated to the cornerbacks coach in 2014 for the Jackrabbits and then was then elevated to the recruiting coordinator, assistant coach and special teams coordinator before leaving after the 2019 season.

Jackson then coached two seasons at Northern Illinois before moving on to Vanderbilt. He was the defensive backs coach for the Commodores in the 2022 and 2023 seasons and then became the defensive coordinator for Idaho in 2024.

Jackson also coached the linebackers for the Vandals and was going to be the defensive coordinator under former Jackrabbit offensive coordinator Jason Eck at New Mexico. Idaho made it to the quarterfinals of the FCS Playoffs under Eck and Jackson this past season.

Jackson replaces Jimmy Rogers, who went 27-3 as the leader of the Jackrabbits and won a national championship in his first season. SDSU also won the national championship in 2022 and has made the playoffs 13-straight times.

Jacksons introductory news conference is expected to be held sometime next week.
