Cossack boys earn first victory of the season

VOLGA The Sioux Valley boys basketball team won its first game of the season on Friday night as the Cossacks beat Baltic 62-55.

Sioux Valley trailed 14-11 at the end of the first quarter. The Cossacks then fell behind 24-15 with three and a half minutes left in the first half but closed the half with a 15-4 run to cut the deficit to 30-28 heading into halftime.

The Cossacks then opened the second half with an 18-4 run to make it 46-36 with 1:43 left in the third. Baltic would make three with one minute left in the third and that made it 46-39 heading into the fourth. Sioux Valley extended the lead to 51-39 with 5:25 left but the Bulldogs then rattled off seven-straight points to make it 51-46 with just under four minutes to play. Sioux Valley then went on an 11-4 run and that clinched the victory for the Cossacks.

The Cossacks were led by Maverick Nelson who had 13 points and nine rebounds. Braden Danzeisen also had 13 points. Brady Hiltunen, Carter Sapp and Levi Loban all had six points.

Ben Erickson had 17 points to lead the Bulldogs. Kellen Artz and Cooper Gary each had 15 points. Artz also had nine rebounds and four assists.

The Cossacks had 29 rebounds and the Bulldogs had 21. Sioux Valley had 19 turnovers and Baltic had 13. The Cossacks were 13-of-17 at the free throw line and the Bulldogs were 8-of-12 at the line.

Sioux Valley is now 1-1 and will play Colman-Egan in the Entringer Classic in Brookings on Dec. 28. Tip off between the Cossacks and Hawks is scheduled for 2 p.m.
