LAKE CAMPBELL A blaze over the noon hour on Monday at Lake Campbell destroyed a garage and a camper, but it would have been worse hadnt firefighters kept it from spreading to two nearby residences.
Firefighters not only had to contend with limited access, but also strong winds and a venting propane tank that was also burning, Brookings Fire Chief Pete Bolzer said.
The fire was reported at 12:32 p.m. on Bortnem Beach Road.
The garage contained a boat and damage estimates were still being collected.
Bolzer said while the adjacent residences were spared, they did suffer some heat damage from the garage fire, which Bolzer thinks is accidental in nature. No injuries were reported.
Six fire trucks and 28 firefighters from the BFD fought the blaze, with additional support provided by firefighters from Arlington, Aurora, Bruce, Elkton, Sinai, Volga and White, Bolzer said, adding firefighters were on the scene for 2.5 hours.
Strong teamwork and exceptional effort by all county responders limited the fires spread during abnormal conditions, Bolzer said.
The sheriffs office will continue to investigate the blaze, Sebring added.
