Bobcats split doubleheader in Huron

HURON The Brookings basketball teams split a doubleheader against Huron on Tuesday night at Huron Arena. The Bobcat girls won 48-27 and the Bobcat boys lost to the Tigers 65-60.

The Brookings girls are now 2-0 and the boys dropped to 0-2. The two teams will host a doubleheader with Tea Area on Thursday night at Bob Jostad Gymnasium. The girls game is set to tip off at 6 p.m. and the boys will follow.

Girls

Brookings 48, Huron 27

A strong first half led the Bobcats to victory on Tuesday night. They outscored the Tigers 13-8 in the first quarter and then took a 28-11 lead into the locker room. Brookings then outscored Huron 13-7 in the third quarter and that put the game away.

Brookings shot 45.2% from the field and was 6-of-17 from three. Logan Smidt led the Bobcats with 13 points and seven rebounds. Sloan McLagan had 12 points. Lily Thompson and Macy Even each had seven points. Thompson also grabbed six rebounds.

The Bobcat defense held the Tigers to 24.3% shooting and they were 3-of-17 from three. Hylton Heinz had nine points to lead Huron.

Brookings had 28 rebounds and Huron had 25. The Bobcats had 13 turnovers and the Tigers had 24. Brookings was 4-of-12 at the free throw line and Huron was 6-of-8.

Boys

Huron 65, Brookings 60

The Bobcat boys were outscored by 10 points in the final quarter and that led to their second loss of the season.

Brookings trailed 13-8 at the end of the first quarter. The Cats responded in the second quarter and cut the lead to 28-27 at halftime. Brookings then outscored Huron 21-15 in the third and took a 48-43 lead into the fourth before the Tigers seized control.

The Bobcats shot 45.7% from the field and were 11-of-20 from three. Brookings was led by Brodie McCarty who had 14 points. Bergan Tetzlaff and Jonathan Kahler each had 11 points. Jones Huntimer had eight points and six assists. Jase Bauer had seven points and Drew Johnson had six points.

Huron shot 39.3% from the field and was 3-of-26 from three. Blake Ellwein and Trace Wenz each had big nights for the Tigers. Ellwein had 21 points and eight rebounds and Wenz had 20 points. Jonathan Peterson had 12 points.

The Tigers won the rebound battle 38-27. Brookings had 16 turnovers and Huron had 10. The Bobcats were 7-of-11 at the free throw line and the Tigers were 14-of-15.
