Nathan Charles Bibby, 67, of Brookings, South Dakota, passed away peacefully at the Brookings Hospital, surrounded by his family.
Nate was born on April 5, 1957, in Brookings. He was the youngest of four children to John Erwin and Jean Frances (Starksen) Bibby. Nate was raised in Brookings, graduating from Brookings High School in 1975. He attended South Dakota State University, while working at B&B Concrete before beginning a long and fulfilling career at 3M. Nate worked as a machine operator for 36 years, until his retirement in 2016.
In 1978, Nate married Susan McDaniel, and together they had two children: Elly Jo and Jay. Later, he married Rhonda Hoffman in 1984, with whom he welcomed three children: Kyle, Meghan, and Stefani.
As a child, Nate enjoyed his time as a Boy Scout. He carried on the skills he learned there, throughout his life, making innovative First Aid kits and ensuring he and his loved ones were always prepared with necessary tools and gear. Nate had a passion for the outdoors and adventure, enjoying activities like backpacking, rock climbing, skiing, boating, biking and traveling. His other hobbies included reading, looking at maps, and watching Jeopardy!-he rarely missed an episode and impressively played along.
Nate took pride in his time serving on the Brookings City Council in 1999. After becoming ill in 2018, Nate found joy in helping the ladies in his condo, often chauffeuring them on trips to Sioux Falls for appointments and shopping, and they sure adored him as well. Above all, Nate cherished time spent with his family and especially loved being a grandpa. He was sure to tell anyone he talked to how proud he was of his children and how lucky he was to be their Dad.
Nate is survived by his children Elly Jo (Reese) Wagner and their children, Weston, Jocelyn, and Abby; Jay (Jennifer) Bibby-Kelley and their children, Jeffrey (and his daughter Lily), Jadyn, Jenna, and Jackson; Kyle (Tera) Bibby; Meghan (Matt Cook) Bibby and their children, Brewer and Hazel; Stefani (Jon) Schelhaas and their children, Harrison and Maren.
He is also survived by his siblings, Steve Bibby and Mary Jo Bibby, as well as his niece Emily Siira and nephew Ross Vander Vorste.
Nate was preceded in death by his parents, John and Jean Bibby, and his brother, John Jay Bibby.
A celebration of Nates life will be held Friday, Dec. 20, at Rudes Funeral Home at 1 p.m., with the visitation on Thursday, Dec. 19th from 5-7 p.m.
