The Sioux Valley girls basketball team picked up their first victory of the season on Saturday night as they beat Clark/Willow Lake 59-38. The Cossack boys played the Cyclones in their season opener and lost 46-42.
Each team will play Baltic in a doubleheader on Thursday night in Volga. The girls are scheduled to tip off at 6:30 p.m. with the boys to follow.
Girls
Sioux Valley 59, Clark/Willow Lake 38
The first quarter was the difference in Saturday nights game between the Cossacks and Cyclones as Sioux Valley outscored CWL 24-5 in the opening frame. The Cossacks then had a 14-7 advantage in the second quarter and took a 38-12 lead into halftime. They then stretched the lead to 55-23 at the end of the third quarter and the Cyclones won the fourth quarter 15-4 to make the final 59-38.
Sioux Valley shot 44% from the field and was 6-of-19 from three. Keyra Kruse led the Cossacks with a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds. Kailey Cradduck had 16 points, five rebounds and four assists. Talya Vincent had 15 points and five rebounds.
CWL shot 34.1% from the field and was 2-of-10 from three. The Cyclones were led by Kamryn Nesheim who had 10 points. Shelby Begeman had nine points.
Sioux Valley had 11 turnovers and CWL had 21. The Cossacks were 9-of-18 at the free throw line and the Cyclones were 6-of-9.
Boys
Clark/Willow Lake 46, Sioux Valley 42
A strong first half from the Cyclones led to the victory on Saturday night.
CWL held an 18-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Cyclones then held the Cossacks scoreless in the second quarter and took a 24-8 lead into the locker room. Sioux Valley cut the lead to 36-25 at the end of the third quarter and then outscored CWL 17-8 in the final quarter but the Cossacks comeback came up short.
Sioux Valley shot 33% from the field and was 7-of-21 from three. The Cossacks were led by Maverick Nelson who had 25 points and six rebounds. Brock Christopherson and Braden Danzeisen each had six points.
Clark/Willow Lake shot 36.5% from the field and was 8-of-20 from three. Sullivan Felberg led the Cyclones with 23 points. Bo Begeman had 12 points.
The Cossacks had 42 rebounds and the Cyclones had 46. Sioux Valley was 7-of-10 at the free throw line and CWL was 4-of-9. The Cossacks had 21 turnovers and the Cyclones had 15.
