Fliers win, Cossacks lose on opening night

Flandreau picked up a win and Sioux Valley suffered a loss in their respective season opening girls basketball games on Thursday night. The Fliers took down Chester and the Cossacks fell to Sisseton.

Flandreau 62, Chester 51

FLANDREAU The Fliers won the first three quarters on Thursday night and that allowed them to get a victory in their season opener.

Flandreau led 15-12 at the end of the first quarter and then took a 29-24 lead into halftime. The Fliers then extended their lead to 50-39 at the end of the third and that was enough of a cushion to get the win as each team scored 12 points in the final quarter.

Sadie Iott led Flandreau with 23 points, six assists and five rebounds. Morgan Sheppard had 18 points, 14 rebounds and six assists. Hannah Krull had eight points and seven rebounds.

Chester was led by Emerson Eppard who had 23 points. Katelyn Schut had 13 points and Jacy Wolf had 10 points.

Flandreau will take on Hamlin next on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Sisseton 77, Sioux Valley 64

SISSETON The Redmen controlled the first three quarters on Thursday night and the Cossacks fourth-quarter surge was too little too late as Sioux Valley fell in its season opener.

Sisseton led 19-14 at the end of the first quarter and then pushed that lead to 34-21 at halftime. The Redmen would extend their lead in the third quarter as they led 58-38 heading into the fourth. Sioux Valley outscored Sisseton 26-19 in the final quarter to make the final 77-64.

Sioux Valley shot 32.3% from the field and was 12-of-45 from three. Talya Vincent led the Cossacks with 19 points, five rebounds and four assists. Liberty Trygstad and Kailey Cradduck each had 15 points. Cradduck also grabbed eight rebounds. Amari Ward had six points.

Krista Langager had a big game for the Redmen as she finished with 32 points and six rebounds. Ruby Rice had 12 points and five rebounds and Alexia Quinn had 11 points, nine assists and six rebounds. Tara Nelson had nine points and seven rebounds.

Sisseton won the rebound battle 43-34. Each team had 17 turnovers. The Cossacks were 10-of-16 at the free throw line and the Redmen were 16-of-26.

Sioux Valley plays at Clark/Willow Lake on Saturday at 7 p.m.
